SO some of us, recently, have been tossing around the idea of moving to New Zealand, on the grounds that, well, it doesn't have a Johnny Howard.
We find its approach to foreign policy (ie, telling the US to sod off) to be enlightened and refreshing.

The major flaws in this plan, of course, are that, well, most of NZ is quite cold, especially the bits you'd want to live in, and, well, it's Over There. It's not Melbourne.

Which leaves us, really, with only one sane course of action.
Who else wants to secede their house from Australia, and declare it part of New Zealand?

Let's just do the old tried-and-unsure thing of making our own country. I get to
be pope.

I'll be in that, I've been having that same conversation with a completely different group of friends. We hadn't gotten as far as declaring ourselves part of NZ though. I like it!

It were my idea! I wonder if we can get the main states to secede and join NZ... leaving ACT all on its lonesome...

That'd just shift the problem to NZ. The ACT doesn't elect the federal government all on its own. Most of the people who voted Little Johnny in are in the states...

Indeed.
In fact, it's probably far more appropriate for us all to move (back) to Canberra, and secede the ACT in toto.
Then we'd be closer to Wentworth Falls, too.

That works for me. Though it doesn't solve the problem of Wentworth Falls being too far from Melbourne...

'course that brings up the whole problem of having to use NZ$ which has an even worse exchange rate than ours.

No no.

Sea shells!
Or, more realistically, we keep getting paid by .au companies, in .au dollars.
We just happen to be NZ residents, and therefore fabulously wealthy by NZ standards!

To really be like NZ we will have to make it rain a lot so it gets very green. And we will need to important some sheep. Possums and rats we can do. We'll have to pick up all the rubbish because it's clean. We can have transsexuals and rastifarians in our parliament, and ban nuclear weapons. We will also have to give up vowels.

NZ is a great place. But there is a reason that 10% of there population (yes that's right 10%) live here.

Opportunity

(for example in my profession there are no specialist dermatologists in NZ at all, in Melbourne alone there are 3)

Melbourne doesn't rain enough?
Man. If NZ rains more than here, I'm *really* not moving.
But yes, we figured secession gives us all the benefits of NZ without actually having to leave Melbourne!

I just wanna move to NZ full stop, I LIKE it being cold! Actually I seriously would except for I only have 2 frineds there and I have slightly more than 2 here and I'd miss you all because NZ is too far away.

So there's yer fundamental problem - NZ is too far from OZ.

Although how hot-cold is the northern tip? Could we just all move there and make our own little geektown all wired up and stuff?

That's fine. What we need is a couple of thousand tugboats and chains. We wrap the chains around north island and drag it closer to Australia.

Easy! :)

You'd be better off dragging tasmania into international waters and further north, then declaring it an independant nation. I get to be King.
