We have the funkiest house in the world.

There's three of us - two geeks and a rabbit.
We're looking, probably, for another geek, but anyone easy going , meat friendly, smoke friendly, friendly. Did we mention easy going?
$500 per calendar month, which also covers our cleaner once a month. Shared bills (~ $50 pcm).
We're in Collingwood - handy for Smith St, Brunswick St, etc.
Available 1st November.
Own hub a plus.

Just thought I'd add....

...the house also has bedrooms. One of which will be vacant, hence the need for a housemate. Thought I'd point that out, since he seems to have taken photos of every other part of the house....

Y'know this'd be just about perfect for me if the govt paid me enough that I could afford it :)

I'm not sure you're right for the position anyway. We're apparently looking for another computer geek (Come to think of it, I don't remember being consulted on this), and you're more of a comic geek. And I like being the household authority on comics, and insisting everyone read the ones I like, and listen to me complain when Strangers In Paradise ends on a cliffhanger again. I know they're often just humoring me, but it'd still spoil all my fun to have a housemate who had his own opinions on the subject.:)

Am too a computer geek! Why else would I be studying what I'm studying? Whatever it is that I'm studying...

As for the comic geek bit, you've just got to handle it the way The Jesus Andrew and I did when we lived together - have mutually exclusive fields of expertise :)

Actually... I think I would pay money to live inside your stained glass window with the deer on it.... privacy might be an issue, but the violation of physics would get me heaps of geek cred.

m00se!
It's a room with a m00se!

And there are hills in it to hide behind for privacy.

I'd certainly be impressed if you figured out how to live inside our glass door. And if you do, we won't charge you rent!

I know my target market...

You do indeed know your target market. I'd rather like a housemate who's bright enough to know a house ought to consist of more than hallways....and while we're on the subject, I'd like to know who exactly you meant by "we", when you said we were looking for another geek. Nobody consulted me about it, and I don't think Ben's been home for weeks. I want a housemate whose hobbies are knitting, tanks, and making me cups of tea.

How about own rack?

grin

Nah.

From: [identity profile] tyggerjai.livejournal.com
Technically I own a third of a rack, and intend to buy thorf and bron out and bring it home one day.
Rack space isn't so much the problem - they stack neatly - but the 10/100 switching hub downstairs is so out of ports it's not funny.

SO a hub would be better, but a rack is always handy.

Mind you, buying a 16 port switching 10/100 hub would be cheaper than buying out the rest of the rack.

Hmm...
You thinking of moving to Melbourne, then?

Not before the end of next year, most likely. hobbes reckons that's when she'll get bored of Canberra and want to go back to Melbourne. Probably a bit outside of your ideal timeframe, I suspect.

As for the hub thing - I do have a spare 16 port hub (10Mbit, not switching) that I can (probably) send down with hobbes next time she comes to visit. You want?

YEah, end of next year is "paid off the debts, think about overseas trip" time :)
A hub would ba ace - even a 10 base will take the strain off the overflowing downstairs hub.
Half the machines downstairs won't benefit from 100 anyway - the Mac, the indys, the HP.
Either because they don't support it, or because they're just not used enough.

Hobbes (and Megan for that matter) is perfectly happy to compromise on the not moving to canberra thing :)

So given there is a nice room and a nice job waiting... hmm.. much easier option :) move to melbourne instead!

it is a really really nice house

/me wonders if megan would dissaprove of a rack...

I like this plan!

Depends what you're using as a comparator.

Tempting

Damn that's tempting...

But... could you handle living with me and my toys.
How big is the room? I tend to need 2 rooms plus a garage to myself these days.

Depends

On your power usage, largely :)
We have no threephase, so the big toys might have to stay behind :)

Purchase of a motorcycle is waiting on several things:

  1. Paying off the car

  2. Buying life insurance

  3. Buying health insurance

  4. Learning how to ride a motorcycle

So it'll be a while.

Well, Stuart has a bike, so we're staying constant there.
Most computers live either in bedrooms or the puter room, so that's not so bad either.

So long as they don't dim the lights or spill into the library.

Actually my power usage isn't that high...
Usually only 2 or 3 machines on at a time (one with no monitor)... the rack (16 port 100baseTX switch and dual port 1200/9600 packet radio TNC).

The only thing I have at the moment that needs 3 phase is my 35kW shortwave transmitter, which isn't being used until I get my generator back... and that'll be going in my van when I buy one some time next year.
But yes... I suspect a number of my toys (the shed full of Apollo 20 inch monitors and the 6 foot high stack of sparcstations) will have to stay behind.

20 " monitors would be fine if they're at all VGA adaptable.
Or 13W3, of course.

Sort of.... they have weird cables but i have soldered up adaptors... only thing they've been tested with though is linux and they are fixed at 1024x800 (no, not 768, I really mean 1024x800)

XFree86 drives them perfectly... Windows wont talk to them at all...

35kW shortwave transmitter

Ow. What kind of licence do you need to drive one of those?

Re: Depends

You need a full amateur radio licence plus an experimental licence.

I dont think you can get the experimental licences any more... I got mine under the old Department of Transport and Communications rules before it changes to the DOC and then the Spectrum Management Authority.
