So [livejournal.com profile] bunnikins has this thing for Vin Diesel. And among her collection of Vin DVDs is _The Iron Giant_. Which we watched tonight, since we've seen both _Pitch Black_ and _xXx_ a few times recently.

Based on the book by Ted Hughes. To which, of course, my reaction was "Heh. Poor guy - imagine trying to make a literary reputation with *that* name. Not to mention trying to get a date."

Imagine my surprise - it really was written by *the* Ted Hughes.
Still, he did have children and possibly grandchildren. And presumably they needed all the laughs they could get.

Fuck me!

Yes, upon discovering this fact, Jai did exclaim "Fuck me!" no less than NINE times.

We're lucky you didn't summon Beetleguise or Hastur or something.

I love the Iron Giant! I saw a preview which was introduced by Harry Connick jr (who happened to be in town) and there really were women there who threw knickers at him. yes, at a kids' film.

Some time back I was researching the life of Byron, and read a very good biography by Andre Maurois, who had also written biographies of Shelley and various others.

A while later I was looking through [livejournal.com profile] reynardo's bookshelf and discovered he'd also written 'Fattypuffs and Thinifers', a children's book which I *loved* as a littlun :-)

And Oscar too

Oscar Wilde's childrens' stories (which he composed because he had kids) are terrific to. But you'd expect that.

Well, yes. But while Oscar had some serious works, and "mature themes", he was, above all, a shining wit. It's the other thing he's famous for.

Ted Hughes, on the other hand ....

What springs to mind immediately, of course, is "See Crow Die. Die, Crow, Die".
Or perhaps "The Day Mummy Stuck her Head in the Oven".
Followed by the sequel "The day Step-Mummy Topped herself and her Small Child."

Much as I admire the mans work, about the only thing more bizarre than a Ted Hughes childrens book would be Philip Larkin's Illustrated "They Fuck You Up, Your Mum and Dad", for ages 3-8.
