Has anyone out there used any of the stand-alone USB TV capture boxes (or dongles, but I'd prefer compression done before it hits the PC) with Linux, preferably Ubuntu?

I don't need very good quality, just streaming video from a TV source to the EEEPC.

Digital Terrestrial Television

I am not sure what channels you are after but it seems that you already have digital television.

I believe that DTT is already mpeg encoded so you might not need to worry about the compression at all if you want to use an available DTT station.

I was going to do something like this but got stuck at working out a good antenna in brunswick. It seem that where we were only one on the roof would do for al channels except SBS.

Anyway good luck.

None of that actually helps, but perhaps I should be more verbose. I have a wireless camera/receiver that outputs NTSC on a standard RCA jack. It'll plug into a TV fine, but I want to view it on the EEEPC.

I've used the WinTV USB (by Hauppauge) before, and I wouldn't recommend it.

Things to look out for:

1. USB2.0 unless you want really low-res (320x200 @ 30 fps)

2. Encoder on the device (in which case I think you're looking at using the DVB system rather than V4L system).

If you want something good (i.e. encoder on the device) you're going to pay a lot more ($400+ in AU as opposed to <$100) and you're going to have more problems finding a device that will capture composite video at all - most of the higher end devices seem to assume you'll be working with a digital video capture device (set top box or firewire DV or whatever).

If you can narrow down a device in the next couple of days, perhaps fizit can have a look at Changi on the way over. Assuming she's going through Changi.

Hey, apropos of this, what is your media beast setup? Input hardware, output hardware, software, ir dongle, etc.

I haven't used any, but you may want to check out LinuxTV. Contains, amongst others, a list of supported devices.

I use a Pinnacle 72e USB stick for DVB-T, but it sounds as if you have an existing source of video which you want to display, for which there are several composite-to-USB sticks available. I saw one being used by an Amiga artist to display the video output of his A1200 on an eeepc.

Yoyo, I'm retarded, and I just found the charger for the mp3 player. Is it too late to give it to Jess? I could just post it tomorrow?

She leaves at stupid oclock tomorrow morning, so unless you're in footscray tonight, seems unlikely. And I don't have her number. Stick it in the post. Will the thing work without it? What's the voltage?

It should have charge left on it, and you can charge it by plugging it into the computer with a USB cable, just takes ages. It says "Input: 100 -240VAC ~ 50-60Hz, 0.3A" and "Output: 5V ---- 1000mA" on it.

Yeah, stick it on a slow boat to China. I'll charge off USB in the meantime. Cheers.
