Linux TV capture.
Oct. 7th, 2008 06:43 amHas anyone out there used any of the stand-alone USB TV capture boxes (or dongles, but I'd prefer compression done before it hits the PC) with Linux, preferably Ubuntu?
I don't need very good quality, just streaming video from a TV source to the EEEPC.

I believe that DTT is already mpeg encoded so you might not need to worry about the compression at all if you want to use an available DTT station.
I was going to do something like this but got stuck at working out a good antenna in brunswick. It seem that where we were only one on the roof would do for al channels except SBS.
Anyway good luck.

Date: 2008-10-07 04:28 am (UTC)Things to look out for:
1. USB2.0 unless you want really low-res (320x200 @ 30 fps)
2. Encoder on the device (in which case I think you're looking at using the DVB system rather than V4L system).
If you want something good (i.e. encoder on the device) you're going to pay a lot more ($400+ in AU as opposed to <$100) and you're going to have more problems finding a device that will capture composite video at all - most of the higher end devices seem to assume you'll be working with a digital video capture device (set top box or firewire DV or whatever).
