Career opportunities...
Nov. 10th, 2004 11:31 amI think I know what I Really want to do.
Film FX, particularly, of course sci-fi SFX. Not, interestingly, CGI, but props/LX/set stuff.
Anyone have any connections? And is it all in Sydney these days?

It's very competitive, mate - and you compete with crew from O/S, especially if it's big budget and they've bought in ILM, for example. There are a number of small 'boutique' firms and agencies supplying this sort of service, but they are mostly serving Fox in Sydney, or Warners in the Gold Coast, at the moment. That is the nature of the industry, though - you have to follow the work. I know one fellow (who does CG compositing) who's moved from LA to London to Wellington...of course, there's always the good people at WETA, in Wellington, NZ....I hear they sometimes turn their hand to fillums...
Seriously - try them.
However, more usefully, this site may help you out - it's subscription ($66 p.a. - hell, get a job, write it off on tax!), but it frequently has all sorts of industry techie jobs, including FX work:

Failing all that, a call to the MEAA may steer you in the right direction.

And when you've got some work under your belt, I'll poach you for crew on my film. ;-)
Mmmmm....zeppelins....submarines....
