For my part: mostly because the email comment notifications can be rather slow coming (nearly 24 hours the other day), so it's a second means of seeing when somebody comments on mine. Secondary reason would be that it lets me see when I've mucked up the formatting, and doing it this way is less bother than checking the post individually.
Nothing I couldn't do by opening my journal in a separate window, but this saves a little bit of effort.
Oh, and I can always defriend myself if I'm feeling *really* bitchy.
If you primarily read Lj in friends view, it means that your own posts show up - they make a handy marker when reading through backlogs of messages. :)
The same reason I have a mirror near the front door to the house, so I can check myself before leaving, make sure the shirt is tucked in, fly closed, etc.
