p_cat,
kitling and I were discussing Jeanette Winterson at the NYE PorkFest, since
kitling hasn't experienced her, and
p_cat and I are Jeanette evangelists. We did the whole "But don't start with her later work" thing that Jeanette fans have to do (and, I might add, that Jeanette herself does - she considers her "real" work to be a 7 book cycle starting with _Oranges_). But not until today have I heard the perfect description of why. Courtesy of
morgan303 - "before she got a dose of the Tori's".
Accurate _and_ hilarious.

Date: 2004-01-29 09:27 pm (UTC)I wrote my Honours thesis on her. I used to love her, passionately.
I read 'Art Objects'.
I despise the evil Modernist cow.
I haven't been able to touch her books for years. I can recognise that they are blissful, glowing works of art. My revulsion to her so-called art criticism means that I still can't read her. Not yet.
Apparently, the great Fall of literature was due to the invention of the printing press, which led the greater literacy, and the rise of popular fiction. Winterson argues that only a great few can create Art, and only a select few (namely, patrons, who can pay for it) are able to appreciate it.
See how angry she still makes me!

And don't talk to me about Tori. Y kant she read, anyway?
