So apparently I now own an Xbox.

Which will, apparently, run Debian (and therefore XMame).
And which will let me play Zim on the TV! I don't quite have [livejournal.com profile] blarglefiend's needs for recording, so the Xbox will be perfect for just playback of divx/whatever, and MP3s. Yay. All very yay.

What I'd kill for, at the moment, to complete my plans for world domination, is a video/stereo component/amp style case, to make an MP3 server for work. We're running Slimp3d on an old mac, and it's ... choppy, at best. I want a mini-ITX VIA board with Big Honking Disks in a video/stereo style case. Mmmmm, hardware.

A Dreambox might get you what you want, too, though it may also be overkil. PPC-based thing, runs Linux from flash though you could netboot it instead or stick a disk in there.

Meant to be a digital TV set-top-box (so it has bits in there for MPEG-2 playback and DVB-S/C capture) but basically a general LinuxPPC machine in AV-component-style case and low noise.

How are you sanitizing it?

I picked up bunny Huangs book (which I highly recommend) about a month ago. Are you going feral with the soldering iron, or using a pogo pin screwdown to the LPC pads?

Hmm.

Neither, I must admit. I hadn't realise they needed "sanitising". I found instructions on loading and running linux without touching the hardware - apparently there are ways around the "trusted code" crap.

Means booting into MS crap first, which is a bit of a chore, but not enough of a chore to crack it open and mess with the insides.
