The geekiest thing I've ever done...
Nov. 9th, 2003 07:45 pmI have about a million old bits and pieces of writing, ranging from cringeworthy to best-I've-ever-written, on an old Mac Classic. Which is currently hooked up, via Appletalk (via the printer port) to macavity-the-powermac. Which means I can run wordperfect 2 (!) on macavity to read the old files on the Classic.
Then, I can save those files in plain text (because nothing reads WP files anymore, except maybe WP, whhic doesn't exist anymore for linux, and I certainly don't own it) on macavity, and ftp them up to kittling.
To be even geekier, I installed VNC server on macavity, so I can in fact do all this from the Throbbing Beast, which now has debian. So I'm crippling recently-state-of-the-art hardware by running it through two sets of networking foo - each older and crapper than the last - to run a ten year old program on a 15 year old computer to rescue ten year old gems as ... well, I'm not going to inflict them on you. But imagine the worst possible schmaltzy 16 year old crap. This is worse. But in among it there are some gems. Well, actually I lie. It's all cr5ap. Why? Because I can :)
(update: Ouch. It ended up being easier to move all the files and the WP app. to macavity and cutting out a step. Less geeky, more sane)

Yeah but...
Date: 2003-11-09 02:00 am (UTC)I am surprised there are no tools that support WP2 format.
Earliest I know of is libwpd which only goes back as far as WP4.
Hey you could always run a mac emulator on the linux box and then read the files from the mac via netatalk :)

Date: 2003-11-09 05:30 pm (UTC)This is exactly what old computers exist for... Pulling apart, connecting them up with other stuff and using them as word processors...
*sniff* I want my PDP-11 back!
