Manky Telstra. Roll on ADSL.

Anyone have any horror stories about TPG?
My faith in Internode has recently dwindled, and TPG are cheaper, though the pipe is less phat.
TPG do "unlimited" 512/128 for $99 a month, with (apparently) static IP(s) and reverse DNS.
Internode do "unlimited" 1500/256 for $150, but dynamic IP. We could .. ."arrange" statics, but it's a pain, and given Internodes recent performance, I'm a bit leery. Opinions, anyone?

In other news, our project manager has recently dyed her hair fire-engine red, and it's very spiky. How could we *not* dub her "Manage-me Elmo"?

Have I bitched to you about the lag from vurt.net recently...

It seems that pipe size really does matter...

Well, with ADSL. The main lag there is outbound, because your outbound pipe is tiny, and with TCP/IP, you get outbound traffic of up to 8% of your inbound (ACKS), *plus* your outbound, which is why people suggested SDSL, to fatten up your outgoing pipe.
The Tentacles do a lot of web hosting/mail lists, so there's a lot of outbound already, plus the inbound overhead.

I don't think we move anywhere near the same amount of traffic as the tentacles, nor do I plan to :)

And the *minimum* outbound we're looking at is 128 K.

Not 64, which is, frankly, pissy :)
But then I'm a size queen :)

I don't know the specifics, but Daniel Pittman is using iinet and has nothing but good to say about them...

I've been with Internode for about a year and been very happy with them. I suspect you guys will run in to trouble with whatever ISP you choose, as hardly anyone seems able to handle BGP properly these days -- I guess that's what happens when a whole industry chronically underpays it's technical staff.

Yep. See Also the recent Vurt debacle.
Internode seem fine for home use, but then you get dynamic IPs.
The Tentacle IPs tunneled through internode became less attractive every day vurt was down....

I figure the BGP shouldn't be a drama once it's done once - it's not like we're multihoming at home, and tey are the ISPs IPs, so you'd imagine they could cope with routing them to us :)

But then all ISPs suck.

*sigh*

If it were just home use, I'd go internode, but The Flatmate wants static IPs with reverse DNS, and I'm happier with static IPs than pissing about with dyndns.

Hrm, yeah, I can see why you might go elsewhere if you really must have static IPs at home.

Personally, I don't think it's a very good idea, and anything that should have a static IP ought to be in colo. But I'm getting grumpy in my old age.

I suppose you could always try and add [livejournal.com profile] ltempt to your household. That'd give you access to cheap Request services. :)

Well, I was tempted to go the colo thing, but I like having the box in the corner of the living room :)

Actually, if you can recommend a good .au colo place. Actually, I suppose it doesn't have to be .au. Panix, then ? ;)

If it's services rather than a complete machine you need, join TINHO. Ping me by mail if you want info -- I'm not sure we're supposed to put too much info into the public domain...

Nah. I want, basically, at least one machine I can break, and have rewtly powers on. And it'd mean an account for The Flatmate, since the Reverse DNS requirement is for him (work ssh and known, resolving addresses, or something).

Roll on IPv6 :)

Superuser is possible -- we do FreeBSD, and split stuff off into jails. You can do what you like in your own jail, short of giving shell accounts to non-members.

(We have two completely separate mail systems, for example -- one run by the Cabal, one run by Vadik in his own jail as he wanted stuff we didn't provide.)

You may, however, be surprised by how infrequently you need root on a TINHO machine, We have two, BTW, one in NYC and one in Amsterdam.

If the flatmate just needs somewhere from which ti ssh, I imagine a compromise could be found.

Don't know about Australian colo providers. TINHO meets all my needs in that regard.

Hrm.
And no bandwidth restrictions and I can do whatever I like and virtual mail and cool stuff?
Hrm. Almost tempting.
But, y'know...
I'm a control freak, basically :)
