Blew away XP on the throbbing beast, installed W2K and Beos. The astute among you will note an operating system or two missing, but since the Throbbing Beast is almost exclusively a games machine, with the odd bit of CD burning, I haven't thus far needed a Real Operating System. And now that I have Talisman up and running, with the gorgeous FlashDance theme, it's almost usable.

What would be perfect, of course, is a *decent* terminal.

I need, fundamentally, putty, but ... prettier. rxvt -rv, or Eterm --trans --shade 50, basically. An xterm, rather than an ssh client. Which is a distinction without a difference, and I realise that I'm being precious, but somehow putty never feels quite right.

Any suggestions? "Get a windows X server and run rxvt on the remote machine" will not be terribly appreciated, nor will "Cygwin". They're options, but they're sledgehammers. Surely.
VNC ditto - I tried running a VNC session to the server *and* streaming MP3s. No go. I hadn't realised VNC was quite that over the top, but apparently so.

Though I realise that the real answer is "debian", and that I've really not made it clear what I actually want. Ah well.

X-Win32, or Exceed.

You know where I have Exceed7 stashed.

It gives you a real xterm, ftpd, inetd and X display that you can export to/from.

Which is back to the whole buying the kitchen sink because I need a plug problem.
Feh.

Ah well. I got putty more or less at the stage I like by turning nvidia transparency on, and finding a vaguely bearable windows themes.

now I just need to persuade talisman to play friendly with Nvidia multiple desktops, and I'm laughing.

Yeah... VNC is a dog... in the wonderful world of windoze (tm) to stream mp3's at any decent rate you'd need to use remote desktop/terminal services fun these days - not that this helps you in the least.
My suggestion, yes, would be debian... although, I'm sure there would be other more "interesting" options out there which could be worth exploring just for the sake of it!

Manky windoze.

Yeah. It's not a problem with the debian boxes, so I assume it's either the doze VNC client, or that windows really is just too stupid to walk and chew gum. Doesn't seem to be the nyetwork, at least.

Debian would be my first choice, or FReeBSD. Tempting also to put QNX on it. I'd try Minix and Plan9, but ... I don't know how they'll cope with the modern-ness of it all.

its the doze client. it knows how to transfer bmp's and thats about all... although I am willing to accept the solution that windows requires one of those blonde tapes - breath in, breath out...
