Am I missing something here?
I can set up custom friends groups, so that all of my friends except Megan can see a post, but I can't, apparently, set up a group that is purely exclusionary - I have to explicitly include all my friends. Which means, of course, that I can't set up a group that everyone in the world except megan is in. Which suX0rz.
Not that I'm keeping things from my girlfriend. But still :)

No, you're not missing anything. There's no "deny" group functionality, which means you can only do "deny" by doing a massive "allow" of everyone except the denied, as you describe. Try downloading lochjournal... Don't bother posting using it (its history downloady bit is b0rked), but its group editing functionality is the bestest. And you can fiddle with all the pretty colours really easily...

Err, PS, the reason there's no "deny" group, is it makes no sense. If you can read it while you're logged out, then you can read it...

Sort of. The "allow/deny" is implicitly restricted to logged in users anyway. I'd be happy with "any logged in user apart from "foo". If excluding anonymous users is the cost of excluding person foo, then that's fine. It's not, I'll grant, the same as "anyone except foo", but it's better than "Every individual on my friends list, especially the 13 people I've just had to add because I know them, and later I'll come back and add other people to my friends list just so that they can see posts that I don't want Foo to see, even though I don't actually want them cluttering my friends list...."

The usefulness of "deny Foo" is degraded somewhat by the login stuff, certainly, but it's certainly not negated entirely.

You know, the source is available. You could add a "don't let my girlfriend see that I'm bringing home cartloads of obsolete crap again" function and submit it for inclusion on the main LJ site. If you did they'd probably even give you Stuff(TM).

The above example is of course, purely hypothetical.

I'm sure the real reason is more like "I'm planning a nice surprise for my girlfriend".

There's a whole list of stuff I intend to do to Livejournal in my Copious Free Time. This is way down the list.

And of course the intent is to plan lovely romantic surprises. But, y'know, the street finds its own uses for things.

Just so long as you don't expect me to believe that, I shall pretend I'm not watching.

Carry on.

I wish LJ could do that - along with myriad other things. High on that list is a decent search function, for which I would definitely pay for a paid account, yep.

I think I might get a paid account again anyway though. I need friendsfriends. I do.
