I can't believe I'm seriously contemplating paying $1,600 to study Russian at UniMelb for a semester next year. It is cheaper than a semester in Kiev, though, and as my wife points out "It's in Melbourne. Not Kiev.". Though I think a semester in Kiev would be awesome, if I survived.

I want to go back to Uni, I think. I'm too late for next year - and not certain enough to commit anyway - but soon. The trouble is, I want to do everything. Double major in theatre production and engineering, with an extra major in Russian language. Sounds good. But that's 4 years of my life ....

Advise me, oh interwebs. I think blowing a few grand on a couple of semesters of Russian is not a bad plan, to start with. Train trapeze as well, work where and when I can .... there are worse plans. It means not going to Russian with Corteo, but then Corteo will come to Australia!

I say go for it. You're obviously into it, it's not Kiev, it'll be a refreshing change of environment and money on education is never a waste.

Which reminds me, I'll also need some French classes.

CAE is the only place I've studied, but I'd recommend it. It's relaxed, learning gets done, and the teacher looks like a French-Moroccan vampire.

Melbourne Uni isn't the first place I'd recommend for languages, unless it's got a particularly good reputation for Russian? Why a university rather than a language school?

Google has not been terribly helpful on the subject of language schools offering Russian in Melbourne. There seems to be one in East Melbourne, that'll do one class a week. So it's not so much a good reputation as the only place I could find, literally, to study Russian in Melbourne.

I don't think you can beat being in the place, but I don't know the surrounding situation. I'm tempted to do law, just at random, myself, at open uni.

Do it at tafe. Not so long and less costly.

Do you know of a TAFE Russian course in Melbourne? I can't find any on google.

Class details
Currently there are no classes scheduled for this course.

Sometimes. I'll ask them about it when I get back, but that's not so promising, though they may have one next year.

Kiev would have the benefit of providing you with a tonne of practice, straight out the door of the class... but I can't think of any other particular benefits it has, whereas Melbourne has all the benefits of being in Australia.

As a test run for "do you want to get back into study", a semester of Russian sounds like a good litmus test.

Yeah, though it might corrupt my Russian with Ukrainian. And, y'know, the country might collapse in a blaze of anarchy. But other than that, I see no real downside. In fact, part of the appeal is being there for the kind of change the Ukraine is going through at the moment - literally the birth of a new nation. It's just starting to really emerge from the post-Soviet upheaval, and the next few years will be kinda interesting. And potentially very very scary....

Its worth noting that if you do a CAP subject - they are just unimelb's way of making money, if you then decide you want to do a full degree, it won't necessarily count as credits toward that subject unless you get really high marks.

That said - you are clever and its actually kind of easy to get good marks at uni if you are a mature age student.

Unimelb is in serious financial shit at the moment, but really, no worse than any other university.

And if you want languages, engineering and theatre production, unimelb is pretty good choice and the new melbourne model would work nicely with that sort of mixed bag degree.

I like the uni idea :)

Contact the Russian dept. at Melb. Uni. and ask for the name of their special Russian tutor. I took an intensive course with him mid-year so that I could start second semester 1st year Russian. He was affordable and intensive.
