Le mot du jour est "PAMPLEMOUSSE!". All caps. The lovely Annie, our despotic stage manager, was in the garage the other day doing her impersonation of a fat hairy rigger, and someone called her "le petit chef du monde" (little boss of the world). Because, however, we all have terrible accents, she was highly offended. "I'm not a goat!" (chevre). So we pointed out that it could have been worse, we could have called her a pamplemousse (grapefruit). Turns out she quite likes being called pamplemousse. So now she is notre petite pamplemousse.

There you go.

Todays French lesson brought to you by the woman who has also taught me to ask how much coffee she has had today.

Bob the Angry Flower did three or four strips on that very word... except the basis of those strips was that "pamplemousse" means "pineapple" not "grapefruit."

[checks Babelfish]

Looks like he was wrong.

When I was a kid of 6 or 7 there was a restaurant at the top of the national Mutual building in the city called Pamplemousse. It was the swishest restaurant in town (or at least that was the impression my parents had). There were fabulous 360 degree views of the city. I remember that the waiters were all in dinner suits and called me madam and pulled my chair out to sit down.

Little did I know then I was eating in a grapefruit!

I guess it is no different to going to Sumac, or Green Olive today...only it sounded so much more exotic back then....

Прекрасное Далеко

Слышу голос из Прекрасного Далека
Он зовет меня в прекрасные края
Слышу голос голос спрашивает строго
А сегодня что для завтра сделал я
