Freaks and wierdos
Dec. 8th, 2004 02:47 pmSo I was mumbling recently, possibly here, possibly elsewhere, about the sort of art scene San Francisco has - the Burning Man stuff, the Shipyard, Sun Brothers, the techno-art stuff that really, really excites me. And I wondered why that sort of stuff didn't have much of a hold in Melbourne - Melbourne seems the ideal city for it, after all.
So I went a searching. And I came across a couple of names (Lixa Brandt (futurelic), and Sol Nygir ("post-industrial sculptor/mechanizer/taxidermist")), and some work from, oh, 1998-99, when the world was trembling before the onslaught of the new millenium.
After that, really, nada. It's like the world ended in 2000, or something :)
So. Anyone know (of) these people, and whether there's any sort of still active scene for this sort of thing in Melbourne? Stripped of the pagan hippy artsy stuff, the futurelic stuff looks really interesting (and I know the pagan hippy artsy stuff tends to go hand in hand, but hey, I'm just a little more ... restrained about it. No big deal.).
I asked a couple of people about recent Earthcores, but I didn't really get a feel for whether this sort of stuff still goes on in any meaningful way.
(and yeah, I subscribed to the futurelic mailing list - let me know if you're interested, and I'll let you know if it ever gets to a real human moderator for approval :)

Date: 2004-12-07 08:49 pm (UTC)I just left you a message, saying "call me when you finish work, because the weather is a bit iffy."
The weather, you see, is a bit iffy. So I dunno.
But I can meet you at the normal corner @ 5:45, and we can see. We could always go see a movie if the weather is shite.
Right. Done, then. Let's meet at the usual corner @ 5:45.

I guess. Ok - I'll meet you outside your work @ 5:30. That's easy.
Assuming I've finished cleaning the oven by then ...

Date: 2004-12-07 10:21 pm (UTC)The shed is the killer, but our lease is up in 6 months, so, hey, we can find somewhere with a decent workshop then.
Hey - I keep meaning to ask - what sort of facilities do you have at the cracktory? I've seen references to the paint room and the car room, and I surmise from the darkfortress stuff that there's a pretty complete machine shop set up.

Date: 2004-12-07 10:29 pm (UTC)cracktory is part of larger business, a self-service auto garage that some residents here help run. is separate from our facilities, but some stuff still useable (the paint room is a little storage place tucked away, though, with a vent hood, in our space).
