So we have 4 remotes at the moment. TV, DVD, VCR, Stereo. The VCR has multiple audio/video inputs, so the DVD sound goes through it, as does the laptop-based MP3 player, then it goes to the stereo. So playing a DVD goes like this.

Switch DVD player on, generally as part of the disc insertion process. Find TV remote, switch TV on, and change input to AV1. Remember that AV1 is still the VCR, so change to AV2. Find VCR remote, switch video on, and change to AV2. Remember that AV2 is the MP3 player, so change to AV1. Find stereo remote, switch stereo on. Find DVD remote, press play.

Or at least, that's how it went until last night. Four remotes, hideously confusing settings. As of this morning, though each operation still requires a button press [0], we have one remote. Actually, it's a Palm V, so it can not only do the remote thang, but it could, if I get inspired, also tell us what TV shows are on, or switch things on automatically at a given time, or whatever. Switches the TV on and pops up a window on my bedroom workstation to tell me it's Simpsons time.

Yay Palm. Yay the future. Yay things that go beep.

[0] The next obvious step is macros, so a single press does everything required to start playing a DVD.

Sounds like I'm getting more and more obsolete by the second... what use is remembering what's on when if others get a machine to do it?

Big shiny amp. :)

You know, I could put my amp downstairs and we
could do everything from the one remote in glorius
Dolby 5.1 Digital surround.

But I'm not. :)

Nyer.
