Samarkand. This is, of course, an offshoot of obsessively researching Uzbekistan for topics of conversation with Nastyushka, but holy shit! I never really twigged not only that Samarkand was a real place, but that much of the incredible art and architecture survives. And it's in Uzbekistan, which is, well, what you'd expect from a recovering former Soviet republic, apparently. It's no wonder they're all crazy.

Istanbul. Or Constantinople, I'm not really picky.

Morocco. I think this is being re-awakened by [livejournal.com profile] fizit talking about it, but it's always been on the list.

So I have a Grand Plan, to be refined over the next year, and subject to what actually happens when we finish up here. Starting in Guangzhou, I'd like to head West and pick a route back to Istanbul following the Silk Roads. I think that would be an awesome trip. Winding up in Istanbul, and then heading back down across Egypt to Morocco. Of course, that's about 6 months of good travel.

It was interesting chatting to people in Melbourne about when we're coming back for good, and what our plans are - finding a house, finding jobs in Melbourne, etc. It is very tempting to pack stuff up here, ship it home to storage, and take 6 months to come home, via the route above. It means not having a buffer when we get back, but I can find work easily enough. And that was the point of coming over here, to break the inertia of having a house and a job.

We shall see. I'll settle for 2 weeks in Samarkand with Nastyushka. But there's just so much to see out there!

Слышу голос из Прекрасного Далека
Он зовет меня в прекрасные края
Слышу голос голос спрашивает строго
А сегодня что для завтра сделал я
