So. I do a bit of work with one particular employer at some pretty big corporate venues. Crown, Melbourne Park, Hyatt, etc. And at these venues, we work a bit with a few big staging companies. At crown especially we work with Staging Connections, and have made friends with their head tech there. With whom I was chatting last week about casual LX work. "Oh yeah, send me your resume and we'll pass it on! We need good LX riggers. the guys we have really suck, and I know we're looking for people.". So, I do this thing, and she passes my resume on to someone in HR there, who rings to invite me in for an interview. Which strikes me as ... excessive, but if by interview they mean "a chance to make sure you have both legs and aren't completely covered in tattoos and piercings", fair enough.

So I drop in, in reasonable but not too formal work blacks, having shaved, a bit (I've seen their techs. They have beards. No big deal). And while I'm waiting their receptionist says "So, what do you do?" "Freelance LX rigger, mostly" "Oh, great, I think we need riggers."Mm. So I've heard. So this is looking good.

So I have my interview with the pleasant HR guy, and a few minutes in, having covered yes, I have my rigger's ticket, yes, I have LX experience, yes I can do the job, he says "Well, if it were up to me, I'd hire you as a casual, give you some work, but .... Don't take it personally, but .... We have some pretty big corporate clients, the hotels and things ... I can't hire you with dreadlocks.".

*blink*

Obvious piercings and tattoos, fair enough, but .... I'm a rigger. In the entertainment industry. I'm not even a board op. or a sound op., let alone client liaison. I rig heavy stuff.

They were very nice about it, and I totally understand that for a small number of their gigs it might matter, and that it's not worth having someone on their books who they can't send to some gigs. So for them I guess it makes sense. But it does explain why they're short of riggers.

Cos, y'know, not only do many of us have dreadlocks, but we're inclined to say "Oh. Well, I guess I'll look elsewhere." when you delicately hint that you could employ us if we'd cut our hair ....
