"This is what you want ...."
Apr. 24th, 2006 04:22 pmI've always been a big fan of letting the Universe make my tricky decisions for me. When I was becoming disgruntled with programming, but wasn't sure if I really wanted to go back to theatre, or how I would afford the time it took to get up to speed, the Universe sent me a big fat redundancy payout to answer both questions, and then I did my dogging and rigging course with a guy who has basically put food on my table with staging work for the last year. When I wasn't sure if I wanted to leave dancing and move into IT, the unverse gave me a chronic foot injury (ok, so that one could have been more subtle), and a job in IT courtesy of one of my former students. It works out.
And recently, I've been bitching to
daniwella, among others that while the Taurus in me really wants a good steady paycheck guaranteed every week, I really don't want to be fulltime with the guys who are my main employer - I got out of IT partly to avoid the 9-5 daily rut - replacing it with a 7.30 *am* every day rut seems foolish. So today my boss took me aside and said "So ... I get this vibe that you'd actually rather stay casual - is that right?". To which I said, well, yes, but the money was a concern. Turns out that they're restructuring their pay rates so that fulltimers actually get penalty rates for working poublic holidays, and since I'm a casual and not eligible for such (apparently), they were giving me an across the board raise. Which means I lose out on public holidays, but every other day I win! So while I was on a roll I rang circus oz, and looks like I'm working the full tent in/out. Crap money and hard work, but it's the circus, man!
Off now to poke the guys at the Malthouse and various other contacts - see if I can get some real theatre. Only a year late, but better than never :)
