Hardware shenanigans
Sep. 19th, 2004 11:20 pmSo I recently purchased some new hardware, to upgrade the Throbbing Beast. And I'm always nervous, putting PCs together. It's all very expensive and fragile, and I had a couple of "crunch" moments putting this new one together. But I got there, and plugged it in, and switched it on. And the CPU fan fired up, and the LED came on, and all was good, except no video. That's ok - I did wonder when I put the video card in if it was the dodgy one. Power down CPU, take out video card, put new video card in, go to plug power supply back in. Realise power supply is plugged in. Um. Hope it doesn't matter. Switch PC on. Nada. Zilch. Zip.
Oh well. IF I'm lucky, I've just fried the fairly mediocre motherboard. If I'm *really* lucky, I've just fried the crappy power supply.
But the older I get - and the higher my disposable income becomes, perhaps - the less I worry about it. A year or two ago, my incompetence and the thought of "wasting" that money would have really bummed me out. Now, eh. It's only hardware, which is only money, and since I have neither children nor mortgage, it's not a huge deal. The things you own ....
Speaking of which, tangentially, I went to SCA heavy training today. Didn't fight, but did quarter-speed drills with
erudito, which was fun. And reminded me of the last time I played SCA, when I was a penniless student, and still managed to be creative, inspired, whatever. So it's not about the money. I need to remember that more often. Though the money helps when you need new armour, I'll grant.
I think it's the dreads. There's something inherently non-materialistic about them.
And frisbee. I see there's a splinter group. Fitzroy gardens is a nice venue, though, I can see that. Sundays at Fitzroy Gardens, then?
